RE: Who's going to Alaska Next summer?

Before Oct. 10th I was planning on retiring the first of March '09 and then the middle of May head to Alaska until Sept. then start back home.
I want to see the sights, fly fish for Rainbow Trout at Coopers Landing and Halibit in Homer. A trip up the Haul road was something else I had planned on doing.
I'm hoping things will change and I'll be able to keep my plans.

RE: GM "Employee Pricing"

The employee price will be the same at each GM dealer. The price of an extended warranty will vary so shop dealers. You don't have to buy warranty from the dealer you buy the truck from. Also check to be sure your camper will fit in the new truck.

RE: camping with elderly parents

My 91 1/2 year old father enjoys boondocking with me for a week at a time. My Lance has two fold down entrance steps. My biggest fear is that Dad will fall durning one of his 4 nightly trips to the bathroom. He sleeps in one of the twin beds in the cabover. It's a struggle for him to climb up there but he's a tough old bird and will not give in to his aches and pains. I bought from Cabela's an LED battery operated lantern that has a remote that he can turn on during the night to see his way.
Dad and his wife have traveled back and forth across the States many times in their class C so since he can't do that anymore he really appreciates being able to go with me and I enjoy his company.
My suggestion to those with elderly parents....if the folks want to go RVing with you, do everything you can to make it happen because after they're gone you'll charish the memories.

RE: truck camper and hurricane on its way....what to do??

I disagree with the ones that say leave the jacks up. First if you have positioned it properly then the wind will not be hitting directly from the side. If it will flip with the jacks down it will have flipped from them being up, the jacks act as outriggers to some degree, just like they use on cranes. Don't take weight with the jacks, just have them touch. I would also fill the voids left between the camper and the wheel wells to help lock it in place. As others say fill all tanks. The idea of screw in anchors if they will work in your situation are good as well. Emergency brake on. I have had my rig ride out storms before, no problem, the BIGEST thing is positioning it properly, so that it takes it from the front. You will not be moving it during the force winds, I have shifted to a new position during the eye for the change in wind direction, but you aren't loading and you do not have to bring the jacks all of the way up, so it is not a problem. Having taken winds at sea and dockside over 100 mph with the vessel that I captain and never taking one bit of damage, these are my opinions. I have to say that the funniest thing that I have read in a long time is the comparison to the plywood and the mattress. Thanks Sleepy!
Yeah they dead wrong on that. A truck camper secured to a truck is going to flip sooner with jacks up than jacks down. NO DOUBT!!!!
Whats messing their mind up is the flex, they thinking oh the wind is going to flex it and reduce the side wall area, but that is going to be mitigated by the fact that now you have shifted center of gravity towards flipping and you now have some under belly of the truck getting some lateral wind. more i think about it............
Its going to flip way faster with the jacks up, WAY FASTER
Lets say you had 15 guys walk up to both trucks and push laterally on both perpendicular to the ground, they strong guys now, they LSU players, Now wich rig is going to take more energy to flip? think about it?
jacks down going to be way harder to flip.
I have made that peace offering for years and said there is one and only one advantage a drw had over a srw and that was in a tornado situation the srw would flip sooner might just be 10 mph wind speed but it will flip faster.
With Ike on his way it would be a perfect time to prove the "jacks up" group to be wrong. Put your campers side by side with one having the jacks down and the other jacks up. Set up a video camera and see which one flips first.
Just kidding of course...If it was me in Ike's path I'd be driving North with the jacks up...
I was a mile away sitting in a KOA out in the middle of no where when a tornado went thru Topeka, Kanas and another bad storm in MT while boondocking in an open field. Both times with jacks up. We bounced around alot but never came close to flipping. All six tires stayed on the ground for which I was very thankful for.
Stay safe my Friends

RE: truck camper and hurricane on its way....what to do??

The way I see it is the jacks would become a pivot point for the camper to flip over. With the jacks up the springs and shocks would absorb the force of the wind and let the truck and camper rock instead of flipping over.
As Sleepy pointed out having the jacks up also gives you the ability to move the truck to face into the wind.

RE: East Coast boondocking?

You're from the East coast so maybe you could share your favorite boondocking sites with us. I stay in KOA's with all the crazies...I like the excitment of barking dogs and loud mouthed drunks.

RE: Couldn't stand it - on the road again

Loved the picture of Camden. I've camped four times at Camden Hills State Park. Love the view of the village and harbor from the high hill in the park. So far Camden is my favortie place in Maine.

Small tubes

Has anyone found a source for smaller tubes of caulk we use on our TC's. I pay $9.00 for a 10oz. tube that goes in a caulking gun, use just a small amount for a small crack. The next time I go to use the caulk it has cured in the nozzle and it can't be used. I'd like to find the caulk in 5oz. squeeze tubes that I can seal after each use.

RE: Security while traveling

Karic,
Thanks for the link to the Canadian Firearms site. Looks like my 12 ga. Mossberg 500A will be no problem. Heading to Alaska next year for 3-4 months to fish and see the sites.
Do you know if I can bring bear spray into Canada? Maybe easier just buying it in Anchorage.

RE: My hat's off to Outfitter Mfg!

Good to hear Outfitter takes care of it's customers. Most TC companies tell you to order what you need through one of their dealers.
Did you take in any of your states 50th anniversary celebrations in Anchorage?

Looking good....I bought mine from eTrailer also. Had to remove the tow hooks but didn't have to drill any holes. I'm getting the truck ready for Alaska next year and want to carry two spare tires.

RE: Loosen tie downs when camping?

I think some are getting too "techno" in wanting to spend all that time dinking around with adjusting jacks and air bags. Just level the truck using blocks, etc and enjoy the camping experience. So what if you're off dead level a couple degrees just be close enough so the fridge works properly.

RE: Larger tires for Dually

Update to my original post....
Yesterday I had the tire guys install two Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor LT235/85R16E on just one rear dual. They lowered the truck to the floor so all the weight was on the tires. The two tires were solid against each other.
I had them install 6 new tires of the same brand just went back to the 215 width. So now we know that on my truck, the 235 in that brand will not work. I liked the look of the larger tire but I know the 215's carry the big Lance without any problems.
